Educating stock creates a calmer environment for livestock and handlers alike. Teaching respect for man and dog begins early in a beast's life, so best started at weaning, if the whole herd is not accepting of a dog's presence during mustering.
Callum's educating process involves walking stock through the processes they will revisit frequently in their lives - from calmly entering and leaving the crush, to leaving the yards in a docile manner. They are taught to both move off pressure and to walk onto it, creating a safer working environment for yardsmen and giving the stock a better understanding of what is expected of them and causing less stress.
Low stress is a big component of Callum's method, as stress is the biggest reason why stock with access to good nutrition do not gain weight as expected.
Weaner education, is not exclusive to cattle either. Young stock of all species, can benefit from an early introduction to good handling.
The end product of five days yard handling and five days of quad bike and dog handling.
